Drama/Featured/Feature Films/International Perspectives
Newcastle is a layered, beautifully shot coming-of-age story following pro-surfer-in-training Jesse and the lost weekend he and his buddies spend on a secluded beach. Seventeen-year-old Jesse lives in the shadow of his older brother Victor’s failure to become surfing’s Next Big Thing. Jesse’s emo brother Fergus tags along, eager to be one of the gang. The guys will be tempted, taunted and tested as their lives change forever, in this risk-taking film that paddles out past the breakers and takes on the big waves. With mind-blowing surfing footage, breathtaking scenery both Aussie landscape and actors onscreen— and a story that’s true to teenage form, Newcastle helps redefine a generation desperate to find where exactly it fits in. After all, you’re only young forever once. Canadian Premiere
Documentary/Featured/Feature Films/Gala Films/Inspired Music
Life isn’t some vertical or horizontal line. You have your own internal world, and it’s not neat. —Patti Smith Punk poetess Patti Smith is profiled in this highly anticipated feature documentary by first-time filmmaker Steven Sebring. Following the fiercely original musician for nearly a decade, Sebring avoids any direct chronological or dramatic approaches to Smith's life and art. Instead he achieves a rich collage of present and past in the poet's world, including her relationships with the late controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and playwright/actor Sam Shepard. At the centre of the film, of course, is Smith's extraordinary music, which electrified the world from 1975 onward when her stunning debut album Horses prepared the ground for the 1970s alternative music movement.

Immediately after the Songwriters Circle, Mamabolo will take to the stage. Who is Mamabolo? Let's let the music experts at The Carleton explain:

Mamabolo featuring Barbara mamabolo, John Kastner and director Rob stefaniuk will play a few songs after songwriter showcase.

What it means is this: Jeff has produced a movie called
Suck, that will be screening at the Atlantic Film Festival on Friday (September 25th). Some of the cast of the movie are also in town and are musicians. They will be making a special appearance at The Carleton directly following the Atlantic Film Festival/Songwriter's Association of Canada Songwriter's Circle Soundtracks & Stories (also at the Carleton on the 24th - 7 PM). Incidentally, the movie is about a rock band of vampires and also stars Jennifer Pare, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Dave Farrell and Malcolm MacDowell!

Barbara Mambolo is joined by John Kastner (who some of you may remember from seminal Canadian rock band, The Doughboys and Rob Stefaniuk who wrote and directed the film... Admission will be free. Come out!
Getting Crafty with Handmade Nation

On Thursday, September 24th, Halifax's enthusiastic crafting community will be gathering up their yarn and heading to Park Lane for the screening of Handmade Nation. This inspiring doc about crafting and DIY culture features folks who knit, embroider, make prints, blow glass, make jewelery and do just about any other crafty thing you can think of. They talk about why they love to craft and how it fits into larger ideas of social and environmental justice.

Don't miss the awesome craft-crawl of events before the screening:

The Loop (1547 Barrington Street) will host Loop Group from 6 to 8:30 pm. Bring your craft-in-progress, and enjoy some treats while work. I'm going to bring the scarf I've been working on for three years and ask someone how the heck to bind it off. Seriously, I just keep knitting and knitting 'cause I don't know what to do.

Love, Me Boutique (1539 Birmingham Street) will also be hosting a pre-screening reception from 7 to 8:30 pm.

And it doesn't stop there! When you head over to Empire Park Lane, theatre 3 for the Handmade Nation screening, at 9:30 pm, there will be hands-on crafting demos and tons of door prizes!

So whether you're a veteran crafter or newbie like myself, (who just enjoys occasionally affixing a lot of glitter to construction paper and calling it art), this event will be amazing!
