Nik Sheehans feature-length examination of avant-garde author, inventor and psychic pioneer Bryan Gyson is an engrossing trip through some of farthest reaches of art and popular culture in the last half-century. With testimonials from Marianne Faithful, DJ Spooky, Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth, along with legendary filmmaker Kenneth Anger, FLicKeR zeroes in on Gysons invention of the stroboscopic Dream Machine, which allegedly produces a drugless high. His development of cut-up techniquesoften credited to his frequent collaborator William Burroughsis also investigated. The film climaxes with a performance by Iggy and the Stooges in Paris, in front of swirling images thrown by the Dream Machine. For anyone interested in experimental cinema, Beat Era literature and pre-conceptual avant-garde art, FLicKeR is an absolute must-see.
