Dramatist and director Michael Melski has burst upon the big screen with his first feature, the fast, furious and very funny comedy, Growing Op. If you can imagine Cheech and Chong rewriting Sidney Lumets classic on-the-run drama Running On Empty with a nod to the continuing cable TV series Weeds, you might catch the subversive and hilarious premise of Growing Op.
When a marijuana-growing hippie couple move to the suburbs, their 18-year-old son longs to abandon home schooling and join the rest of the teenage crowddespite the potential danger for discovery of his parents occupation. Myriad plot twists and turns later, Growing Op retains its point of view as a zany critique of contemporary suburban mores. Driven by a razor-sharp wit, fabulous performances from Daniel MacIvor, Hugh Thompson and Bill Carr, Growing Op is a coming-of-age dramatic comedy with a difference. |
