In Oxford, England, the Mulberry Bush boarding school is home to 40 children who are unable to succeed in mainstream schools. For these traumatized children with severe behavioural problems, this is the chance to turn their young lives around. Director Kim Longinotto quietly observes the staff, students and their families over the course of a year. Seemingly nothing is off limits as the children erupt into shocking tantrums, cursing, kicking and the occasional wee in the corners of their rooms. All the while, empathy grows not only for the infinitely patient staff but also, surprisingly, for the troubled kids. Experienced Director Longinotto creates an intriguing picture of how these children came to need Mulberry Bush School and the importance to society of just such a school. With its humour and respect, Hold me Tight, Let me Go is instantly relatable to anyone who has ever dealt with a problem child, or been in awe of those who do.
