Documentary/Feature Films/Inspired Doc
A feature-length documentary by Steve James ( Hoop Dreams ) and Peter Gilbert ( Vietnam: A Long Time Coming ), At the Death House Door looks at the possible wrongful conviction and execution of Carlos DeLuna in Texas on December 7, 1989, through the eyes of longtime Huntsville prison chaplain Carroll Pickett. Pickett served 15 years as the spiritual advisor in the Walls Prison Death Row unit; DeLuna's execution still troubles him the most. Channelling other great judicial stories such as The Thin Blue Line , Brother's Keeper and Paradise Lost , this is an eloquent and persuasive anti-capital punishment film that blends a spellbinding narrative with gripping visuals. The result is superior non-fiction storytelling that, while grounded in regionalism, speaks to the universal human search for compassion and justice.

For a cartoon band that doesnt technically exist, the Gorillaz sure have been prolific. With several singles, two albums and numerous music videos, the group has created a multimedia experience like no other. Now, we finally get an exclusive look behind the scenes of this animated band in director Ceri Levys freewheeling documentary. Created on a whim one evening by alternative cartoonist Jamie Hewlett ( Tank Girl ), and Damon Albarn of Blur , this band went on to become something special. The film follows these two hilarious best friends through the production of two albums as they record with the best from the worlds of music and film, including Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista Social Club and the legendary madman of film, Dennis Hopper. Bananaz culminates in the climatic concerts put on by this fake band in the real world, as it proves you dont necessarily have to exist to put on a great show.

Documentary/Feature Films/International Perspectives
Inspired by the exhibition of the same name, Beautiful Losers celebrates the explosion of independent do-it-yourself artists that sprung up from the underground youth cultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk rock and hip-hop in the early 1990s. With no formal training and limited knowledge of the art world, these artists would go on to form the most influential art movement of their generation. Following the most well known members of the movement, we hear its oral history from the perspective of the people who made it happen, including Canadian Geoff McFetridge, pro skater Ed Templeton and influential female artist Margaret Kilgallen. Co-directed by one of the early leaders of the movement, Aaron Rose, this inspiring and raw documentary implores us to all to go out and make something from nothing.
