For nine years, animator Jeff Chiba Stearns’ life was consumed by ‘to-do’ lists written on yellow sticky notes. So he decided to fight back. Using only the titular medium and a pen, he has documented one man’s animated journey through an uncertain time.
Drama/International Perspectives/Short Films
Seventeen-year-old Hue’s life is falling apart. Consumed by paranoia and increasingly disturbing visions, he finds himself questioning his reality. Filled with unforgettable imagery Young Man Falling is a compelling and visually dazzling film.
Fiesta at Five
A road trip for two teenage guys with raging hormones and an older, wiser and more experienced young woman turns out to be a funny, sexy and surprisingly illuminating journey into the contemporary state of Latin America’s soul.
Drama/Feature Films/International Perspectives/Special Presentations
Kevin Smith is back to his main gig after a few acting side projects ( Catch and Release , Live Free or Die Hard ) managed to keep him out of the director’s chair since 2006’s Clerks II. Back to his old raunchy tricks, he takes the porno out of the dialogue and into the action, as two old friends who are strapped for cash look to adult entertainment to ease their troubles. Judd Apatow favourite and ad-libber extraordinaire Seth Rogen is joined by the stunningly beautiful and hilarious Elizabeth Banks, starring as Zach and Miri in this surprisingly heartwarming farce about finding love in the strangest (and horniest) of places.
Atlantic Focus/Documentary/Short Films
Donna Davies’ latest documentary for SPACE is a brisk tour through the ever-vibrant world of the cinema’s living dead. Featuring a spot-on interview with legendary director George Romero ( Diary Of the Dead , Dawn Of the Dead ), Davies’ film is remarkably lithe and manoeuvrable considering the subject: slow-moving flesh-eaters who have risen from the grave. While the genre’s history gets a fleeting glance—there are clips from 1932’s White Zombie with Bela Lugosi and onward—Davies’ doc has chosen a canny concentration on the modern-day zombie extravaganza, from the boffo Brit flick Shaun Of the to Romero’s luxe Land Of the Dead .
