The birth journey becomes a harrowing medical and bureaucratic nightmare in this stark black-and-white animated film that serves also as a complaint and a plea for justice. Using austere line drawings and woodcut-style imagery that portrays the Quebec/Canadian health system complete with clowns, remote classical gods and medieval courtiers, Passages is a cautionary tale of the highest order.
