One of the more significant entries at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Amreeka is the sensitive neo-realist retelling of the American immigrant saga, with some important twists. First, the family is Palestinian, from Bethlehem. Second, its a single middle-class mom named Muna and her promising 15-year-old son, Fadi. Third, the intrepid duo lands in the suburban Mid-west an hour and a half from Chicago. Lodging with her sister's family--with a brother-in-law doctor--Muna and Fadi experience their new country with a mix of wonder and dread. When the Iraq war breaks out, however, intolerance and misunderstandings intrude on the family's humour and enthusiasm, sparking a crisis that challenges the entire family.
Producer Paul Barkin will be in attendance.
